Awe, Gratitude, and a resilient Nervous System:

Cultivating Sustainability from the inside out

Would you like to fall in love with being alive? Stress and trauma take us out of the present moment and make us feel outside of the stream of life. Experiences of awe and gratitude bring us back. They support us “feeling in love with the unfolding experience of aliveness”. Experiencing awe can make us more altruistic, less entitled - a trait linked to depression and anxiety - and reduce inflammation, an effect that improves immune functioning and fights depression. Similarly, gratitude can promote feelings of well-being, protect us from trauma, enhance our relationships and has a host of other positive benefits.

Professor Bonnie Harnden will present the current research on awe and gratitude and demonstrate how, when harnessed, they have the capacity to notice and heal our nervous systems - promoting health and wellness throughout our lives. Participants will learn specific tools that can be directly applied in their clinical work as well as their everyday lives.

This 3 hour innovative workshop will harness the research on awe and gratitude through lecture, embodiment, and experiential creative arts therapies activities. Participants will learn how to support their nervous systems, to come back into presence, and an overall feeling of aliveness. Climate change from a nervous system perspective and developing inner sustainability will be discussed. They will also learn how-to prevent and recover from burnout and to improve their wellbeing across multiple domains.

Bonnie Harnden is a creative arts therapist, psychoanalyst, couple and family therapist, and associate professor in Concordia University’s Creative Arts Therapies Department, where she coordinates the drama therapy program and a new Graduate Certificate in Play Therapy. She was awarded the 2017 research award from the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA) for her play and film 'You Arrive' which explores the therapeutic process and how it helps to resolve the effects of trauma. Her research uses arts-based performance to focus on the effects of trauma and the healing possibilities of awe and gratitude. In 2018 she was awarded the NADTA teaching excellence award and was the recipient of the 2019 Concordia President’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Her film ‘You Arrive’ has been awarded numerous film festival awards including: the Cannes World Film Festival for shorts and documentaries, best educational film at the Berlin Shorts awards, best documentary film at the Reale Film Festival and best portrayal of a therapist at the Believe Psychology Film Festival.
